My American Day: An Ordinary Tuesday in the Life of Barbara Ferguson
Hi, friends! This is Barbara Ferguson, and I'm from Washington, D.C. Today I want to share with you what a typical Tuesday looks like for a 14-year-old girl in the capital of the United States. Let's get started!
The morning starts early.
My alarm goes off at 6:30—yes, it's brutal, but there's no other way! First thing I do is check social media: a couple of likes on yesterday's photo, messages from friends. Then it's a quick shower, choosing an outfit (today it's high-waisted jeans and a hoodie with my favorite band's logo), and styling my hair. I usually straighten my hair—it's quicker.
We have a family breakfast: Mom makes avocado toast, Dad makes coffee, and I pour myself some orange juice. We discuss our plans for the day—I have three tests today, a choir performance after school, and a meeting with friends in the park in the evening.
School: Lessons, Friends, and Lunch
At 7:45, Emily, my best friend, picks me up. We drive to school together in her car—her parents gave her a used Ford for her 16th birthday, but she drives carefully, so everything's okay.
It's a busy day at school:
First period: Math. We're working on quadratic equations: ax
2
+bx+c=0. I'm not a fan of algebra, but I try to keep up.
Second period: English. We're reading Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird." We're discussing the topic of justice—it's always interesting.
Third period: Biology. Today we're learning about cell structure. Our teacher, Mr. Johnson, likes to show funny memes about mitochondria—it helps us remember the material better.
Fourth period: Physical Education. We're playing volleyball. Our team wins, and I feel great!
Lunch is sacred. The girls and I sit at our favorite table by the window. Today's menu: a turkey sandwich, chips, and chocolate pudding. We discuss the new TV show everyone's watching and our weekend plans.
After School: Choir and Sports
After class, I go to choir rehearsal. We're preparing to perform at the school concert—we'll be singing a cover of a Taylor Swift song. Our conductor, Ms. Clark, says I have a good voice for the second part.
Then comes running practice. I'm on the school team, and the competition is coming soon. Today, we're running 3 km in the park next to the school. I'm tired, but I feel a rush of endorphins—it's worth it!
Evening: Relaxation and Plans
At home, I do my homework—the hardest things first: math and an English essay. Then I have dinner with my family. Today, Mom made pasta with tomato sauce and a Caprese salad.
After dinner, I have time for myself. Me:
Scrolling through TikTok (there are so many funny videos!);
Chatting with my friends in a group chat;
Trying on the new earrings I bought last week;
Watching an episode of my favorite TV show.
Before bed, I set my alarm for tomorrow, charge my phone, and write a few lines in my journal about my day. Today was a busy day, but I'm happy.
That's my typical Tuesday. Nothing out of the ordinary, but that's the beauty of being a teenager—every day brings something new!
See you soon on the blog!
Yours, Barbara ❤️
